Sleep, Again

This leads to two new questions:

What am I seeing, then? Or, Why do I need eyes?
And,
WTF is with sleeping?

For approximately 20 of my likely at least 60 years, I am inert cognitively and behaviorally, as externally observed. I become generally and relatively unresponsive to environmental stimuli, and initiate little movement. This time is spent, from the cognitive side, as either complete lapse of consciousness whatsoever, or as dreaming.

My senses are dulled, and certainly my eyes can't work the way they do when I'm awake and taking advantage of that view.

So, if I'm not using my eyeballs to 'see' what I see in my dreams, then how am I seeing it?

What am I perceiving?
