Two scrambled eggs, with lots of cracked pepper, chunky slices of raw cucumber with raspberry vinaigrette, and a tall glass of iced orange juice. The door to the balcony is open, and it's about 65 degrees. Lots of birds are chattering in the trees - we get lots of migrating birds through here, from everywhere. Even Canada geese.

Isn't that a beautiful description? What an incredible composition that wakes up and brings color and light and motion to my mind. That - what just took place, what was acted out in your mind and my own as we read those first sentences (and while our peripheral vision soaked in the woman in the red dress, and the pale colored bottles lined up on the shelves) - that is what Barfield called 'figuration'.
